Have your best garden yet

May 2, 2013
The Plant Clinic is the authority that many gardeners turn to when they see a problem with their plants, such as an unfamiliar insect or a browned branch. You can bring in a sample to the clinic just across from the Visitor Center or email a picture.
The expert staff and volunteers also can help with identification—for example, if you just moved to a new house and have no idea what those shrubs in the yard are, or if you want to know for sure what kind of evergreen you have to make sure you prune it the right way.
But before you even have a plant, the Plant Clinic can provide valuable advice about which one to buy. Looking for a crab apple variety that has pink flowers, purple leaves and small fruit? Need help deciding on the right groundcover under a Norway maple? Wondering what shrub might be able to handle the hot sun next to a driveway? Just ask. Call 630-719-2424 or email plantclinic@mortonarb.org.
The more you know about your site, the better and more specific advice the Plant Clinic can provide. So before you call, email or visit, think about how many hours of sun your spot gets each day, which direction it faces, and what the soil is like.
And if you just want to browse, there is a wealth of Plant Clinic advice online at mortonarb.org/plantadvice for choosing and caring for trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses.
