Oak ecosystems are declining across the Midwest. The Arboretum is undertaking research and restoration initiatives to find ways to combat these declines.

Description/abstract
Arboretum researchers are exploring techniques to encourage oak seedling recruitment, including canopy thinning. Oak seedlings monitored are being monitored for growth in different treatments. This study on the grounds of the Arboretum is part of a larger-scale study in the Lake County Forest Preserve District.
